Sometimes logic stares you right in the face, and you do nothing with it. That’s what I thought when I realized that after more than 130 blog posts, I still hadn’t written about the magnificent Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante. That changes now.
Google it, and the castle often ranks number one on the list of tourist attractions in the province. Situated on a 166-meter-high hill, the monument offers majestic views over the Bay of Alicante. It is one of the largest medieval fortresses in all of Spain.
Despite being built in the 9th century by Moorish rulers, little remains of the original features in the current castle. The significance of the castle complex, now divided into four areas across three different heights, goes far beyond its visual appeal. Virtually all historically significant monuments in Alicante's history are closely tied to the castle.
Initially, it was primarily intended to unite the city, but during the Spanish Civil War, it was also used as a prison.
Those who walk from the top downwards first encounter the remains, mostly from the 14th century. The middle section houses the main buildings of the massive complex, dating back to the 16th century. At the lowest level, monuments from the 18th century can be seen.
While wandering through the entire complex, visitors can see the following: separate castles for the king and queen, a bell tower, a hospital, barracks, ruins of an old bakery and chapel, a water reservoir, and defensive walls.
The great importance of the castle was recognized in the 20th century when it was designated a monument of historical and artistic value.
The castle can be reached in several ways. Minibuses depart from Plaza Puerta del Mar near Postiguet Beach. Across from that beach, there’s also an elevator on Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora. Additionally, there are several walking routes.
Opening hours depend on the season. Information on this can be provided by the tourist office.
