There is no shortage of beautiful hiking trails on the Costas. For a very special hiking experience, Relleu is definitely worth it. This municipality in the heart of the province of Alicante has built a reputation as the most exciting and breathtaking hike in the region. A wooden footbridge has been built over a length of one kilometre with spectacular views over the ravine of the Amadorio river. The walk over the planks that are stretched between two mountain walls over a 60-metre deep gorge is less suitable for people with a fear of heights. Those who nevertheless think they can handle the walk may become extra nervous because of the planks that can seem wobbly or the railing that feels fragile. But that is only appearance. The entire construction is indeed very solid.
A few years ago, the footbridge was extended in length. This takes you even deeper into the mountains. Other changes include a staircase that descends deep into the gorge and a glass balcony. From this new viewpoint, the hiker can peer straight into the gorge. For many, this offers an equally frightening and breathtaking view of the reservoir and the Relleu dam located in the depths.
Those who do not have a fear of heights will be able to enjoy all the beauty that the area has to offer without any nerves during the walk along the narrow path: spectacular views, breathtaking natural beauty and deep enjoyment of the wild mountain landscape.
Most people who find this special experience a bit short, combine it with two other hiking trails that have been set out around Relleu. Both the routes of approximately 1 hour (3.6 kilometers) and 3 hours (10 kilometers) stop about halfway through the ravine tour. These walks pass caves, old water mills and irrigation channels, among other things.
For those who want to repeat the sensation of the Relleu experience, you can walk the King's Path in Andalusia. A similar tour is possible there. With the difference that this route was known in the past as the most dangerous hiking trail in the world. Nowadays it has been made safe, but as a spectacular experience it has lost none of its appeal. For more about this see here.
