There is no shortage of day trips. If you do not want to experience the rich cultural heritage of cities such as Alicante, Cartagena, Orihuela, Murcia or Elche, Rojales may be an unsuspected alternative. After all, the village is best known because the large urbanization Quesada is under the administration of Rojales. But Rojales deserves more. Centrally located in the village is a complex of 15 authentic cave houses, which have been dug out of the rocks since the 18th century. These caves, the Rodeo Caves, are now used as workshops and exhibition areas for artists. Lovers of sculpture, painting, leatherwork, ceramic art and pottery can indulge themselves in this unusual setting. By appointment you can see the artists at work or visit the crafts market.
Those who want to have an even more unusual experience after a visit to the caves can find the so-called shell house within walking distance. This fairytale house is completely covered with shells, which the owner found on Spanish and French beaches. Nothing has escaped its 'scaling urge', even the drain pipes are decorated with it. Asked why, the resident gave us a simple reason: "I don't like paints."
