At the southernmost tip of the Costa Calida, on the border with Andalusia, lies Aguilas. The town is situated on a sort of peninsula and has a coastline with numerous beaches, coves, and inlets. This gives it a cozy atmosphere, with some of the coves considered among the most beautiful in this part of the Mediterranean. One of the favorite settings is the bay where the symbol of the city, the San Juan Castle, majestically overlooks the sea and the surrounding land. Another popular beach is at Cabo Cope, flanked by an old watchtower. The tower is one of many remnants from a long and rich history during which many cultures (Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors) left their mark on Aguilas. Especially the traces of Roman rule are still clearly visible in the form of ruins and particularly Roman baths. But Aguilas is best known today for its annual carnival celebration. For no less than two weeks in February, the entire city is captivated by this eruption of fantasy, music, dance, lavish and often daring costumes, and numerous parades. The city's celebration is considered one of the most spectacular carnivals in Spain and has received the designation of 'international tourist interest.' Of particular note is the 'paper clothing' contest and, of course, the parades, which are sometimes held both during the day and in the evening. There is plenty to see and do in the town. Much of life revolves around the large Plaza de Espana, where eight streets converge. This is a wonderful area to relax thanks to the gardens, fountains, trees, and artwork. Another charming spot is the Rincon del Casuco, a long and impressive staircase adorned with thousands of artistic tiles in the typical Gaudi style. Or visit the archaeological museum, follow the route through the fishing district, or take the little train on the third Sunday of the month to tour the town, which passes by many landmarks. And of course, Aguilas has much to offer water sports enthusiasts. It’s a paradise for surfers, divers, sailors, and snorkelers. Or follow the rugged coastline as a hiker and enjoy the numerous spots with stunning views.
