The identity of a city is rarely captured under a single term. Los Alcázares on the Mar Menor has therefore tried to encapsulate its essence in five routes for tourist visitors. And it must be said that these trips together provide a fairly complete and very varied picture of the city at the heart of Europe's largest inland sea.
Brought together in a small brochure, available at the tourist office, quite a few aspects are covered. An easy way to experience the highlights of Los Alcázares is by the tourist train. During this trip, various historical landmarks are visited, such as the old Rami defense tower from the 16th century, the remains of a Roman settlement from the 1st century, and the first spa hotel on the Mar Menor. In addition, the old military airbase, the main church, and a series of sculptures and monuments are also visited.
For an in-depth look at the first seaplane base in Spain, another route has been mapped out. Nowadays, the base, which opened in 1915, is only partially in use. A visit can ideally be combined with a visit to the museum where aircraft models and photographs are on display.
Route three is mainly intended for cyclists. It is dedicated to the more than 150 large murals that have appeared throughout Los Alcázares since 2014. This open-air museum with street art on otherwise dull stretches of concrete has given the city a prominent place in the world of this type of artwork. The variety of murals by international artists is striking: from realistic to collages, from funny to critical, and from impressionistic to absurd. For more on this, see here.
Route four is a free boat trip across the Mar Menor. During this opportunity to explore the inland sea and the islands, guides also provide interesting information about the lagoon and the city.
The last route is for walkers who, behind La Hita beach in a protected nature reserve, will encounter unique flora and fauna. The area is a remnant of an old salt pan. Walkers are made comfortable thanks to the many wooden walkways. Binoculars and a camera are highly recommended during a tour of La Hita.
