With an outstretched hand, the statue of the pilgrim on Avenida de Sandoval invites passersby to follow him on his pilgrimage. The two-meter-tall bronze artwork has stood on the boulevard since 2018, with the sea as a backdrop. Its creator, Juan Joss Quirs, describes his work as "a tribute to peace" and "intended for all people who work every day for a better society."

The symbolism of the statue closely aligns with the rich religious history of the town by the Mar Menor. Additionally, it emphasizes the strong connection that Santiago de la Ribera feels with the famous pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Both communities share the same patron saint, the apostle James. During the unveiling of the statue, Quirs referred to the location of his artwork as kilometer 0 on the long pilgrimage route from Santiago de la Ribera to the final destination of Santiago de Compostela.
