Altea, Calpe and Denia, the larger municipalities to the north of Benidorm, all have an unmistakable symbol with which the cities are immediately associated. Altea has its high-lying old town, Calpe its striking rock and Denia the centuries-old castle on top of a strategic hill by the sea.
Denia's pride has a history that goes back about 2000 years. Some ruins and military fortifications from that time of Roman rule are still visible. But fair is fair, these remains pale in comparison to all the interesting things the Moorish occupiers built in the 10th and 11th centuries. Those interested can still enjoy the achievements of that time.
The large castle mainly had a military function, which is still clearly visible in the citadel with a double wall. Several details such as the Mig tower at the entrance with horseshoe arches testify to the Moorish architecture. Some adjustments after 1609, when the Christians regained the castle from the Moors, indicate a further consolidation of the military function. That was the time when pirate attacks were commonplace along the Mediterranean coast. The governor's palace was also built in the Christian period. It now houses the archaeological museum.
In more recent history, the castle also played an important role. A tunnel underneath the complex served as an air raid shelter for hostile bombing during the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s. To date, the tunnel is still used to connect two parts of the city.
Especially during the summer months, Denia shows off the unique atmosphere that the castle exudes. Then, in the upper part of the wall, free concerts of traditional and popular music are given for two weeks. During that time one can also dine within the castle walls, register for a night visit or try to get on the guest list of one of the many weddings that are held there. This activity makes sense, because such a historic setting with the bonus of undisturbed views of the Mediterranean, the city, the marina and the Montgo mountain make for an enviable total package.
The castle is open to the public all year round. Opening times vary slightly depending on the time of year. Exact information about this is available in the tourist office. Guided tours can also be booked there.
