Residents from a wide region, tourists, and culture enthusiasts can once again indulge in August. Every year, many eagerly anticipate the surprises the international festival of theater, music, and dance in San Javier has in store. For three weeks, the auditorium in Almansa Park becomes the place where groundbreaking cultural expressions go hand in hand with more traditional performances. With the 55th edition on the horizon, it is certain that a fusion of different disciplines of theater, music, and dance will be the order of the day. What can one expect? Based on previous years, the 2024 edition will have both a regional and international character. If there is a common theme for almost all performances, it is innovation. Even more traditional shows often incorporate modern elements such as photography and video. Dance and ballet performances often feature daring and innovative choreography, and acrobatics can easily and naturally blend with dance in San Javier. The theater shows swing between serious, ironic, tragic, traditional, and avant-garde, where social or political themes are not avoided. In short, expect the unexpected. In addition to the emphasis on shows in the auditorium, there are always free street performances on the program. These usually consist of acts that bring music, magic, or circus arts. In the past, these have taken place in San Javier, Santiago de la Ribera, and La Manga. Tickets can be ordered on the festival’s website. Prices range from 10 to 25 euros (2023 pricing). The website also provides detailed information about the acts and the program they will perform. Of course, for some attendees, there may be a challenge if theater performances are presented entirely in Spanish. All in all, the organizers hope and expect that the festival will more than live up to its designation as an event of regional tourist interest.
