A park is a place to find peace and quiet in nature. However, El Recorral Park on the edge of the Quesada residential area aims for much more than that. In addition to recreation and sports, thanks to the long walks that can be taken there, this lush green area is also aimed at education, social gatherings, children's games and environmental protection.
Strangely enough, the park was initially born out of necessity. The problem of water discharges from the sewage treatment plants in the area of Rojales forced the water company Hidragua to find a creative solution together with the city council. The park provided the eureka moment. Five lagoons connected by waterfalls are now the beating heart of the park. The abundance of water gave rise to an enormous biodiversity, which slowly but surely spread throughout the entire park.
It started with the planting of a series of different aquatic plants, typical of the Alicante area. These attracted a variety of life, such as (water) birds, reptiles, amphibians, frogs, dragonflies and small mammals.
Trees that were planted to provide shade
along the water features in turn invited other birds. Tree species and shrubs that can better withstand dry conditions were planted a little further from the water. An attractive habitat for rabbits, wood pigeons, kestrels and woodpeckers, among others.
The biodiversity has now taken on spectacular forms. But besides the rich nature, the park also has a great attraction for families for whom recreation is goal number 1. For adults, the picnic and barbecue facilities are a draw. The youngsters are especially charmed by the way in which fun games can be played. Old tree trunks in all sorts of variations are a welcome change from the traditional children's playgrounds.
Other remains of trees are funny, which have been transformed into beautiful wood carvings. An example of smile-inducing creativity. The 'talking' tree route is educational and fun, where you can learn more about the park and especially the variety of trees by answering questions. Even a small library is not missing in El Recorral.
There is a large parking lot at the entrance. Good signage and information boards help recreational walkers find their way easily. For avid hikers, a 6.7-kilometre route description can be found on the wikiloc website.
Unfortunately, the enthusiasm for the park also has a downside. It can be very busy, especially at weekends, when many Spanish families from far and wide settle in the greenery.
