The Pig Festival has become a well-established tradition in La Mata. The neighborhood on the north side of Torrevieja has over 20 years of experience in organizing this food fest where the pig takes center stage.
The gathering of pork lovers is always held on a Sunday in the second half of January. The setup is simple: the organizers provide over 500 kilos of pork, 150 kilos of fresh bread, and 150 liters of local wine, and the visitors need to do little more than sit down and enjoy the barbecued pieces of meat. And the cost? Nothing, nada.
However, it is expected that the 'guests' bring their own tables, chairs, barbecues, and possibly extra food and drinks.
The location where the festival is held is certainly not bad: right in front of the church on Plaza de Encarnacion Puchol, just a stone's throw from the Mediterranean Sea. All in all, it’s no surprise that this food fest is always well attended. The meal for hundreds begins around noon, but hungry attendees are advised to arrive well in advance, as once it's gone, it's gone. And pre-booking is not possible.
At the end, a lottery is held with a large ham as the prize. The proceeds go towards purchasing the meat for the following year.
An interesting detail of the festival is that it marks the feast of San Anton, the patron saint of animals. Fitting? Decide for yourself.
