Spaniards enjoy their fiestas, processions and festivals. Not only the number of these always colorful events is striking. Also, the time, energy and often even costs that entire communities spend in preparation are sometimes difficult for us Westerners to comprehend. It is not far-fetched to say that organizing and celebrating fiestas is a prerequisite for keeping strong bonds within communities and between generations.
The coronavirus undermines this social mechanism. The virus does not only target the health of individuals. Covid 19 has also launched an attack on the fiestas, in a way of life, on a strong sense of community that inspires great sacrifice for the togetherness of all walks of the Spanish population.
Fiestas are much more than an innate urge to reflect extensively on the past, culture and customs. Fiestas may especially celebrate the idea that great things can be achieved by joining forces.
As a striking example we can look at the Fallas de Valencia. Every year they work selflessly and hard to raise money for the next edition. An estimated 200,000 (!) Residents of the city of Valencia are involved in organizing and executing the fallas. This is a time consuming, creative and expensive activity. The result is a number of meter-high satirical dolls. One even more extravagant than the other. Street parties are held for five days and nights. The outrageous creations are finally burned on March 19. That is also the go-ahead to work together on next year's fallas.
Let's hope the Spanish way of life can be resumed soon. That is good for the Spaniards and the many foreigners, who enjoy all those parties.
