I felt the urge to take a deep dive into history. I am in Merida in the province of Extremadura. Or as people prefer to say here: Mini Rome. Merida is not a big city. Only about 60,000 people live here, but it is like a rich treasury from Roman times. It is truly unbelievable how many beautiful remains from about 2000 years ago can be admired here on such a small area.
I understand why they call it Mini Rome. The ancient Roman theater would be the main attraction in any other Spanish city. But here is also the Puenta Romana bridge. The oldest standing bridge from antiquity in the world with a length of 755 meters. And then you have the immense aqueduct. That's what they called the Aqueduct of Miracles. The reason seems to be that the residents were so impressed by it that they considered it a miracle. And I understand why. It's really impressive.
The reason why Merida is home to so many beautiful things is that the Romans considered the city so important. For a time it was even the capital of the entire diocese of Spain. That is why Merida had all the comforts of large Roman cities.
Well, greetings again, Jolanda.
