The hustle and bustle of Barcelona became a bit overwhelming for me. After an hour and a half of driving, I found the perfect antidote here in Besalú. Arriving over the Roman bridge across the Fluviá River was truly almost surreal. I had never seen such a beautiful bridge in such good condition. And to think that the Romans built it in the 12th century. Via the bridge, you enter the heart of the village immediately. The village feels as if you've been transported back to the Middle Ages in a time capsule. All those narrow streets with galleries, arches, and cozy courtyards lead to charming little squares.
What strikes me most is how well everything here has been preserved since the Middle Ages. The church and the old hospital next to it still look so vital despite their age. In the Jewish quarter, the ritual Jewish baths have been lovingly restored. It’s hard to say goodbye to this oasis, but I must return to the hectic pace of Barcelona. Until next time.
