Dog lovers have seen a change in the way authorities approach their beloved four-legged friends in recent years. The signs 'No entry for dogs' are no longer self-evident along the beaches. The province of Alicante has taken the lead in Spain in allocating special dog beaches. Currently, eight municipalities, including Torrevieja and Santa Pola, have a total of ten beaches open to dogs. And if the explosion in the number of available beaches is a good indication, then we can expect many more 'Dogs allowed' signs along the costas in the future.
According to recent research, Caleta dels Gassets beach in Santa Pola is considered the best and most dog-friendly.
The beach has small stones and fine sand. Torrevieja has reserved a 1,600 meter strip between Cala Ferris and Rocio del Mar for dogs and their owners. Alicante makes the Playa de Agua Amarga available and Villajoyosa has made a small bay with unfortunately many stones available on the Playa Villera del Xarco. The bay of Cala Mosca in Playa Flamenca on the Orihuela Costa has also been cleared for visitors with dogs.
The Costa Cálida currently has three municipalities, which have the same dog-friendly policy. Mazarrón leads the way with three different locations. The longest beach of about one kilometer is on playa Cobaticas and consists of sand, stone and gravel. Playa de las Moreras is half as long, but has thick sand. Finally, the beach at Playa and Gachero contains quite a lot of stones.
Cartagena offers the dogs at playa Canina la Calera on a narrow beach with a length of 1600 meters a place to let off steam. This is a pebble beach.
The municipality of Aguilas has reserved a very modest stretch of beach for dogs on playa de Canada. With a length of 150 meters and many large stones, it is one of the less attractive places for dogs to play.
Of course, certain rules apply to all the beaches. These come down to the following: all dogs must be microchipped and vaccinated, no dangerous breeds allowed, no more than two dogs per person and the mandatory disposal of excrement. In addition, the beaches may not be used by professionals for obedience classes or other types of training.
