The wildlife park Terra Natura in Murcia belongs to the new generation of zoos. Instead of simply observing animals from a distance, this park aims to foster as much interaction between humans and animals as possible. The idea behind this is that it provides visitors with a more educational experience than traditional zoos typically offer.
In some cases, the physical barriers between humans and animals are completely removed. For instance, in the habitat of the Madagascar lemurs, children can cuddle and feed these cute and affectionate creatures. A popular attraction for both young and old is the zone where bird of prey training is demonstrated. Visitors can marvel at the incredible skills of birds such as eagles, owls, hawks, and the peregrine falcon, which can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. Daredevils can even participate in the training of a bird of prey.
Sea lions and the show featuring these playful and curious animals are another major attraction in the park. Under the supervision of a professional guide, it’s possible to swim with the sea lions. Less exotic, but no less appealing to many younger children, are the opportunities to ride ponies or get up close to sheep, deer, and pigs.
The park, covering an area of 165,000 m² and home to over 300 animals and 50 different species, also deviates from traditional zoos in several other ways. Visitors can take a look inside the lion’s den or participate in a three-hour evening safari (with dinner), during which expert guides offer educational talks, such as insights into the behavior of birds of prey.
These educational talks are a fundamental part of Terra Natura's philosophy to provide visitors with a better understanding of animal life. Daily "educational lessons" are also offered about otters, giraffes, and exotic birds. Other animals in the park include hyenas, rhinos, turtles, hippos, brown bears, meerkats, Iberian wolves, and various reptiles and snakes.
