This small town, with its medieval narrow streets and a Moorish atmosphere, is located on the border with the province of Alicante. A walk through the town will take you past many beautiful, old buildings. The 17th-century church of San Jose is a standout. Also not to be missed is the colorful fountain adorned with beautiful mosaics. Dating back to the 16th century, it operates with water from natural springs.

However, Abanilla is best known for the 7-meter-tall statue of Jesus on a hill, next to the remains of an ancient Muslim citadel. A challenging walk is rewarded with impressive views of the town and the surrounding

Walking, in general, can be rewarding in Abanilla. Just outside the town, visitors are greeted by a rugged moonscape, shaped by a combination of erosion and extreme dryness. A popular hiking route leads from the nearby village of Mahoya along the Chicamo River. Besides the bizarre shapes in the landscape, immense cacti, almond and palm trees, and a forest of centuries-old olive trees create an area where enthusiastic photographers will find plenty

Abanilla has a few cultural trump cards. The festival of Moors and Christians is held annually around late April or early May. The first weekend of August is reserved for a folkloric festival with singing and dancing from bygone eras, along with traditional clothing. Popular music from all continents can be part of this colorful celebration.

Finally, the meeting of the Auroros bells is a very old ritual that is revived every third Sunday of October. With the ringing of bells and the singing of old folk songs, brotherhoods from a wide region gather in Abanilla on that day.
