Los Alcázares promotes street art

Los Alcázares promotes street art - Van Dam Estates

What started about six years ago as a small, unusual initiative has grown into a serious business with which Los Alcázares likes to advertise itself. All over the town, a total of more than a hundred large murals have been created in recent years, transforming dull patches of concrete into beautiful works of art. Some street art is hyper realistic, but collages, art with a wink and impressionist works are popping up all over the street scene.

After its tentative start in 2014, when five local artists decorated 18 walls, the city council quickly announced its aspirations. Los Alcázares was to become the largest open air museum for street art in Spain. That was an ambitious ideal. And it must be said, we have worked hard to achieve that goal. Two years later, the festival, which initially had the less lofty title 'Painted Village', had expanded into a three-day festival with lots of live street music and a selection of international painters from all over Europe, America and Africa. That year they produced 44 works. Many of them absolutely deserve the designation of art. Los Alcázares had clearly taken a significant step towards the ultimate goal of being recognized for street art.

Visitors can still enjoy the creative eruptions of those years. Free walking and cycling tours with guides can be booked at the tourist office. If you want to follow the art route on your own, you can get a map at the tourist office showing the locations of the murals. For those with a mobile and internet can consult the online map.

And who knows, one day, completely unexpectedly, a piece of art by Banksy will appear on a wall in Los Alcázares. When that happens, the town on the Mar Menor has really worked its way up to the premier league of street art.
