The history of Torrevieja can roughly be divided into two periods: before and after the massive influx of tourists and European homeowners. The Sea and Salt Museum focuses entirely on the past. In this small museum, in a side street near the Plaza de Constitucion, both the fishing past and the history of salt production are presented in a creative way. Many old photos show visitors how different life was in Torrevieja at the time. A large collection of old utensils and tools, related to both fishing and salt extraction, bring the past to life even more clearly. There are also larger displays to admire. For example, the way in which the salt was extracted and prepared for transport all over the world. The detailed models of old fishing boats to scale are also worth a closer look.
Most visitors, however, mainly come out again with a lot of praise and enthusiasm for the series of salt miniatures. These little works of art are made by local artisans. The boats and objects made of salt not only sparkle beautifully, but also give a creative insight into the traditions, customs and industries of the Torrevieja of yesteryear.
