The location of the San Pedro del Pinatar municipal museum is the most logical one can imagine. The palace of the former Baron De Benifayo is not only stately in allure, but also the oldest existing building in San Pedro. Although the town was already populated 2,500 years ago, it only gained some size with a small core in the middle of the 19th century.
That was when the elite from Murcia chose it as the best place for their summer residences because of the climate.
The collection in the museum includes a wide range of objects. For example, there are fossil finds from the past, which were found during a series of underwater excavations. Roman utensils have been dug up from the ground where the La Raya Roman villa once stood.
You will also find tools and equipment that workers and fishermen used in the past. A little unexpected for a local history museum is perhaps the collection of toys and cinema memorabilia. Finally, there is a room that is neatly decorated in a style that is specific to the building. If you've had enough of looking inside, you'd do well to take a look outside. The museum is, in terms of architecture, a wonderfully eclectic mix of a residential palace with an almost medieval-looking fortress, complete with towers.
The museum has different opening hours depending on the season. For exact information, it is therefore useful to consult the tourist information.
