The Green Ways (Vías Verdes) is a network that utilizes old railway lines. Some have been out of use for a long time, while other railways were never even operational.
The routes have been transformed into cycling and walking areas, which are mostly off-limits to motorized traffic. In the areas around Alicante and Valencia, there are 11 such routes with a total length of 170 kilometers. Along the Green Ways, you will find beautiful tunnels, spectacular viaducts once traversed by trains, forested areas, and agricultural landscapes. Since the old railway lines have been adapted, the paths are also made accessible for people with mild disabilities. In this article, we briefly cover the southernmost routes in the province of Alicante.
The Maigmo route runs from Agost to Puerto del Maigmo over 22 kilometers. This beautiful journey through rugged terrain is owed to a failed initiative from around 1920 to establish a rail connection between Alcoi and Alicante. Impressive viaducts over rivers and ravines, as well as long tunnels, could not prevent that no train ever ran.
The Alcoi Via Verde is 10 kilometers long, from Alcoi to La Canal. This route leads you through pine forests and over viaducts in the Font Roja National Park.
The Torrevieja route is 6.7 kilometers long. Based on the old railway line from Albatera to Torrevieja, this route mainly takes you around the salt lakes and includes a small portion for cycling or walking to the beach.
On sections with tunnels, it is recommended to bring a flashlight. Additionally, it is advised to check with Renfe whether bicycles are allowed on their trains to the nearby starting point.
