Greetings from Peniscola

Greetings from Peniscola - Van Dam Estates

The locals here in Peñíscola call their home "The City in the Sea." Others refer to it as the "Gibraltar of Valencia." I can understand both names. Peñíscola is a phenomenon. Located 125 kilometers north of Valencia, it is a major tourist attraction, especially for many Spaniards. I think its unique location on a narrow rocky peninsula explains much of its popularity. But Peñíscola is much more than just a quirk of nature. When you arrive in the town, you are immediately immersed in its rich history. It starts with the narrow winding streets that naturally draw you up to the 13th-century castle perched high above. The gigantic old gates and towering castle walls need no words or further recommendation to know that this is a special place. Standing over sixty meters above sea level, this former "residence" of Pope Benedict XIII is a proud beacon jutting out into the sea. A place where you have panoramic views of the sea, the mountains, and the village below, where churches, museums, squares, and charming homes complete the picturesque Peñíscola. After a day in Peñíscola, it’s no surprise to read that the town's name is Googled ten times more frequently than its population. And now I also understand why the hugely popular TV series "Game of Thrones" chose Peñíscola to film some scenes. That’s it for now. Greetings, Jolanda.
