Spain - Especially in the months of November to April, the pensioners are delightfully on the Costa Blanca. At least this is the image that certainly lives among many Dutch and Belgians. Of course we do not blame these pensionados because the months of November to April are wonderful to spend the winter in the Costa Blanca. The temperatures during the day are pleasant and the sun is often visible.
The NRC conducted an investigation last summer into the correctness of the image that many Dutch and Belgians spend the winter in the Spanish Costa. The research they conducted focuses in particular on the ownership of Spanish real estate. We also know that many Dutch and Belgians spend the winter in Spain. They rent a holiday home through us or another company. This was not included in the conducted research.
Now the research conducted by the NRC. The Spanish municipalities urge the owners of Spanish real estate to register in the basic administration. Many foreigners who also have a house in their mother country do not do this. It is estimated that there are three times as many Dutch and Belgians living in Spain as there are registered.
Alicante province is the most popular among Belgians and Dutch. About 13,000 Dutch people were registered this year. This means that, according to the estimation model, around 40,000 Dutch people live permanently in the Costa Blanca. All over Spain, it is estimated that there are about 150,000. The population of Spain even has 48 million inhabitants.
Of all registered Dutch people, it appears that not even one in four is above 65 years of age. It is estimated that only 23,000 Dutch pensioners live along the most popular Spanish costas, such as Alicante and Malaga. These are nothing compared to the estimated 170,000 British pensioners living in the Costa Blanca and Costa Del Sol.
It was therefore concluded that the allegation is largely untrue.
In short, when looking at owners of holiday homes in the Costa Blanca, the age structure looks similar to the Netherlands and Belgium. Our experience is that buying Spanish property in the Costa Blanca is done by clients of all ages. Obviously this is not very strange, because Spain offers enough for all ages.
