The birth of a phenomenon can sometimes be reduced to uttering a simple sentence. That happened on July 12, 1977. More than 1,500 visitors attended that memorable summer evening when the loudspeakers sounded: "Good evening, we welcome you to an illusion that is now a reality for everyone." Those first words spoken to an expectant audience heralded the premiere of more than 5,000 evenings of extravaganza at the Benidorm Palace.
The theater shows, combined with a four-course menu, have proved to be a success formula. More than forty years after that first show, the Palace is still drawing full houses. The productions are always an exuberant mixture of song, dance, orchestras, ballet, performing arts, magic, magic acts and humor. This form of total theater has a different central theme every year, which of course guarantees that many visitors return regularly.
Enthusiastic visitors sometimes equate the dazzling shows in quality, choreography and diversity with similar shows in renowned locations such as Las Vegas, Paris and Havana. That is no small commendation. The fact is that the most advanced sound and visual effects technology is used to get the maximum return from the spectacle shows.
A complicating factor in making a night at Benidorm Palace run smoothly is that more than 1,500 diners also have to be served. However, visitors notice little or nothing of the logistical problems that are silently solved every evening. They sit in a semicircle enjoying what is on offer. Thanks to that set-up, everyone has a good view of the show on stage.
In addition to the dinner shows, Benidorm Palace also regularly hosts other important cultural events in the city. This sometimes happens in the Palace building and sometimes on the Plaza de Toros or the Guillermo Amor stadium. Over the years, acts such as Julio Iglesias, Richard Clayderman, the Platters and UB40 have visited the city. For a night out at Benidorm Palace, organized return coach trips from Torrevieja are often available.
