Cities and towns are increasingly working to shine a spotlight on local gastronomy. In particular, the underrated tapa is getting more attention in the south of the

Benijofar, for example, is hosting its annual tapas trail in 2024 from October 4 to 6. The format of these culinary days is almost the same everywhere. Numerous bars and restaurants offer a tapa with a drink for just a few euros. It's also common for participants to vote for their favorite tapa of the year.

Torrevieja, in particular, is making great strides to promote local cuisine. The city hosts two tapas routes each year. The winter edition will run from November 7 to 17 this year. The cost for 2024 is 3.5 euros for a tapa and a drink. The event is repeated in April.

Torrevieja is also the city where leading restaurants from the Vega Baja area will showcase their culinary skills during the gastro-cultural festival from October 25 to 27. For 4 euros, attendees can taste their dishes. During these three days, there will also be live music, cooking shows, wine tastings, and children's cooking workshops from 10 AM to 7:30 PM.

And Torrevieja’s culinary promotion doesn’t stop there. Every year, special themed weeks are organized, where bars and restaurants participate. Examples include Pastry Week (February), Local Rice Dishes (March), and Croquette Week (May).

Other tapas routes (also called trails) take place in San Miguel, Formentera, Los Montesinos, and Catral, usually in April. In addition to Benijofar, Guardamar also has tapas routes in October. Each year, Guardamar ties the gastronomic trail to a different historical event from the town's rich past, meaning that dishes and ingredients from that era are incorporated into the tapas.

All the above information is valid for 2024. For exact dates and prices, contact the local tourist office or Google it.
