MADRID – Everyone has heard of the seven world natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon and the Niagara waterfalls. Spain also has a lot to offer to nature lovers and therefore the insurance company Allianz decided to hold a competition where they could choose the 7 maravillas naturales de España. After more than 80,000 voters via the website and more than 5,000 tweets, a list could be put together with the most beautiful places in Spain. Out of the 20 finalists, 7 maravillas naturales were ultimately chosen.1. Gaztelugatxe (Basque Country)
Gaztelugatxe is a small island (more of a rocky point) located off the coast of Bermeo in the Basque Country. On the small island is a chapel that was built in the tenth century in honor of San Juan. The bridge to the chapel is spectacular and the panoramic views from the island are more than worthwhile.
The Parque Natural de Somiedo is located in the Cordillera Cantábrica, the Cantabrian mountain region. In the nature park you can find important forests with beech, oak and ash. There are also bears, wolves, wild boar and deer that make Somiedo a wonderful area for walking and enjoying nature. In the year 2000, the nature reserve was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
The Parque Natural Cabo de Gata is located in the Andalusia region, in the province of Almería and near the city of Nijar. A Paraia Das Catedrais beach (which is Galician for Playa de los Catedrales) is located in the province of Lugo in Ribadeo.
