Walking and cycling routes in and around Santa Pola - Van Dam Estates

Santa Pola prides itself on being a municipality where conditions are ideal for walkers and cyclists. About three quarters of the total territory is a protected area. This almost automatically means that sports enthusiasts can often practice their hobby in peace. The tourist office has mapped out a large number of interesting routes for hikers, cyclists and mountain bikers. The routes that are described range from a few kilometers to a pretty challenging tour of 52 kilometers, covering the entire territory. To give interested parties an idea of what to expect, information is provided about the sights along the way, the level of difficulty and the estimated duration of a tour. Most routes are suitable for both walkers and cyclists and often start and end points are the same.

What is striking when studying the different travel descriptions is the unprecedented variety that Santa Pola has to offer to visitors. Depending on the tour chosen, Santa Pola's nature offers a wide variety of experiences.

A random selection of these: three watchtowers, an old barracks, salt basins, dunes, a botanical micro-reserve, stranded barque, salt lakes, flamingos, the Meleja nature reserve, a water reservoir, a castle, bays, beaches, anti-aircraft guns, a bunker and pavilions of the Spanish civil war, a fishing port, the Cape of Santa Pola. This list is deliberately a mishmash, but gives a good idea of the rich mix of natural beauty, cultural and historical elements that go hand in hand in Santa Pola.

The tourist office has information on nine routes, six of which are shorter than ten kilometers. The mapped out tours usually focus on different aspects such as the beach, the hills, nature reserves or the salt works. Santa Pola also has wikilocs page where extensive and detailed information on all routes is given.
