Águilas
Águilas is located in the southernmost corner of the Costa Cálida, which was also called the Costa blanca south 25 years ago. It is a former Roman fishing port. The island of Isla del Fraile is located off the coast, where traces and ruins from this Roman past can still be found. In 1579 on a high rock between Poniente and Levante beach, the San Juan de las Águilas fort was built to defend the city against invaders. This castle was rebuilt in the 18th century. Águilas flourished in the 19th century as a commercial center where a British colony exploited silver, lead and iron. Many remains from this mining period have remained visible, including the railway line and the characteristic pier of El Hornillo, where large sea ships could moor.
