Hondón de las Nieves is a municipality of the Spanish region of Vinalopó Medio. It is known that Christian armies conquered Hondón from the Moors in 1246. Until 1839 it was part of the jurisdiction of Aspe and in that year it became an independent municipality together with Hondón de los Frailes. In 1926 Hondón de las Nieves and Hondón de los Frailes separated. In 1900 the municipality had 3,690 inhabitants, but still together with Hondón de los Frailes. The municipality also includes two smaller villages, El Rebalso and La Canalosa.

Geography

The region is full of pine, almond and olive trees, and vineyards. Some places worth visiting are La Cuesta and La Cruz, both suitable for relaxation and recreation. To explore the region on foot, the Ruta del Alto Pelao route is recommended, where many Mediterranean plants can be observed: pine, juniper, thyme, rosemary. The local fauna includes wild boars, foxes, partridges, hares, rabbits and lizards.

Gastronomy

In addition to the quality grapes with the Protected Designation of Origin Uva de Mesa Embolsada del Vinalopó, you can get the following regional dishes: arroz caldoso (creamy rice), gazpacho, gachamiga, puchero (a kind of stew) and rice with rabbit meat and snails.
